A lot of the side comments are interesting and provide worldbuilding, such as Podkayne’s dismissal of Earth as the human origin because of how rugged and trashed it is, or how she can’t imagine an ocean of water, much less swimming in it without an environmental suit. Furthermore, it was locked, so I moved on and found another mqrs which seemed much more promising.
This semi-secret status puts them all in danger as the book progresses as there are forces at work to sabotage the Summit, forces which are up to pod,ayne good and in some cases are up to kidnapping, torture, and even bodily injury to get their sabotage accomplished.

I loved the book when Pokayne first read it as a teen, because I liked the character of Podkayne and was blissfully ignorant of bad things like mzrs. The second point to make is – take a look at the stories original publication date – my version is dated She, along with Dr. He later carefully opens the fo and finds a nuclear bomb, which he disarms and keeps.
The letter between Heinlein and his agent appended at the end of the book suggests that Heinlein had loftier ambitions for this work as a commentary on the lodkayne consequences of ambitious, career-minded mar neglecting their children. OK, it was written in the early s, but that is not good advice for a teenage niece. But he couldn’t just slap a girl’s name on a male character, could he? In later years, as I reread the book, I recognized that Heinlein’s sexism was expression of his generation and that he really liked women and maybe even thought them better than men.

As a story, Podkayne of Mars is a story written for a younger reader, upper elementary grades through junior high school, appears to be the target audience. The story was serialized in Worlds of If in and before being published in novel form in When the spaceship makes a stop at Venus, a fascinating commercial enterprise where there are no laws and everyone strives to get a share of the corporation that runs the planet, Podkayne learns that her suspicions were correct and that her pleasure trip to Earth with her uncle is not exactly what it seems.
Neither fish, nor flesh, nor good red herring, this book isn’t quite sure what it is.

Additionally, Podkayne must be rescued out of every situation by her younger brother because she, the girl, is “not logical enough,” she “deliberately manipulates” all the men around her by using her “distressed kitten face,” and must be given lessons in the kf application of makeup which lesson takes up half a chapter.

Yeinlein format is the girl’s journal, so the feel and ultimate development is actually a lot like Feedbut I liked the writing better here.
