Bloodletters and Badmen
I enjoyed the book very much, but only make it 4 stars since it is a Kindle edition and there were several of the crooks that had passed away or executed. More general than his encyclopedia on organized crime, and hence, probably more accurate.
So far as I know Nash is about the only serious criminologist to believe this theory, and it’s been all but debunked I think by this point in time. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Open to pretty much any page and you’ll find an intriguing article; and with over six hundred pages there’s certainly a lot to get through.

There are over photographs and lithographs and a thorough bibliography. Bloodletters and Badmen by Jay Robert Nash. I remember those books. Scarce in this format.

Good reference, I think I first learned about this in an interview with Bill Pronzini. The famous, the infamous and the lesser known ere represented here, from John Billington hanged in as America’s first murderer to Bloodletter Dillinger, to Abner “Longy” Zwillman.
